A series devoted to powerful, yet often misunderstood geisha and courtesan women. I hope to explore some of the beauty juxtaposed with the ugly side of being in these personas. I have painted these women without faces as a reflection of how they are often seen yet, certainly never forgotten. There is a lot of controversy and contradictions with these women and I express this using various and opposing materials (India ink and oil pastels) in hopes that something interesting happens. People are never just one-sided but often multi-faceted, full of contradictions and opposing ideas. These women I create represent the complexities of the human condition.
